Backing Away from the Cliff

Taking care of yourself is probably one of the last things on the priority list of most ministry workers. Yet it is vital. An unhealthy leader cannot take a ministry to a place of health.

Many of us serve near the edge of the cliff called burnout. We are so focused on caring for others that we neglect to care for ourselves.

What Burnout Looks Like

Burnout is not just being tired. It is a state of chronic physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that results from prolonged stress. Key symptoms include emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment.

The 2025 Clergy Burnout Report found that many pastors feel overwhelmed by the emotional and relational demands of ministry. They feel isolated, unsupported, and unable to admit they are struggling.

Why Ministry Workers Are Vulnerable

The work is never done. The expectations are unrealistic. The boundaries are blurry. And the support is limited. Many pastors do not have peers, mentors, or counselors they can turn to.

How to Back Away from the Cliff

Take Sabbath rest. Set boundaries. Invest in relationships. Get help. And reconnect with your calling.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). That invitation is for pastors too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am burned out?

Warning signs include chronic fatigue, cynicism, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and feeling like nothing you do matters.

Is it selfish to take care of myself?

No. Taking care of yourself is stewardship. God gave you one body, one mind, and one life.

How do I set boundaries without feeling guilty?

Start small. Set one boundary and stick to it. Remember: boundaries are fences with gates, not walls.

What if my church does not support my need for rest?

Have an honest conversation with your leadership. And if they will not listen, consider whether this is the right place for you.

Where can I find resources for burnout prevention?

Standing Stone Ministry offers resources for pastoral burnout. MinistryPlace.net has pastoral care resources.
